The Influence of Podcasts on Listening Ability: Students’ Perspectives

The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of using podcasts on students' learning motivation in listening skills. This study uses a qualitative method. Data were collected from eight college-level students who took part in the year-long study via a questionnaire and then observed them to analyze the data. Questionnaires will be distributed via Google form with seven questions that must be filled out by students. From the results of this study it can be concluded that podcasts can be non-formal learning media that motivate students in learning languages, especially in listening skills.

The research aims to know the differences Aphasia sufferers between children and adult. The researchers in this study noted a child and an adult language impairment characteristics. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method, and in collecting the data, the researchers watched and transcribed the utterances containing the language disorder with the intended person in the YouTube channel. The researchers utilized the two videos as research samples. However, aphasia is a linguistic disorder which ends in language loss or impairment and is brought on by brain damage. Stroke is one of the illnesses that frequently results in aphasia. Children under the age of five have a hard time understanding the words that have been said. Adults find it challenging to communicate, such as speaking with excessive pauses and repeats.

This research is motivated by people who rarely use monolingual languages (1 language). But in everyday life, there are still many people who use two languages (bilingual). At least people who use regional languages and Indonesian. This research was conducted on Subang University students. The results showed that the linguistic situation of Javanese and Sundanese speaking students at the University of Subang was characterized by language contact which made Javanese and Sundanese speaking students at the University of Subang a bilingual society. This study uses a sociolinguistic approach and is a field research. The Sociolinguistic Approach is a methodology that focuses on communication developed using qualitative data. Words become data. The results of this study indicate that the use of bilingualism in society can make it easier for them to adapt to new environments, as well as being a language link or translator for people who have difficulty communicating.

Data was collected from dialogues between ADHD kids and other speakers in YouTube videos based on observation.. The application of a qualitative approach through the comparison of descriptive methods' observations' findings with relevant theories. This is done to help us better understand the pragmatic deficits that children with ADHD have. This study is aimed at discovering students’ perspectives regarding the positive psychology theory and their English learning process. This descriptive study employed questionnaire and interview guidelines in collecting the data. The participants of this study are five English Education study Program students in one of the universities in Subang, West Java. The collected data were then analyzed by recording and interpreting. It is unearthed that all participants apply positive psychology during their English learning process, yet the strategies they utilize in applying it are diverse. However, some of them are still struggling with challenges in learning English. It is expected that this study can provide additional literature for those who are concerned with the psychology aspect of learning English as a Foreign Language.

The purpose of this study was to use the TPR method's efficacy in the process of teaching basic English vocabulary, especially for young learners. Total Physical Response encourages children's curiosity, creativity, and all of their senses, supporting their cognitive development. This research was conducted on 6 students at an elementary school in Kalijati, Subang. The students are grades 2 to 4 (7-10 years). The material taught to students is material about the Part of Body. Students will be taught to recognize vocabulary for body parts in English. This research used qualitative research where the research was conducted based on the actual conditions. This study found that students showed increased motivation and found it easier to remember vocabulary after involving the TPR method in the learning process. In addition, students enjoy more in following the teacher's orders and the whole learning process.

The study also explores the level of self-confidence among EFL students when speaking English, both within and outside the classroom, and identifies the factors that contribute to their self-confidence. Furthermore, the research investigates the strategies employed by students to overcome self-confidence issues in speaking English. The findings of this study will provide valuable insights into EFL students' perspectives on speaking competence and self-confidence, contributing to the development of effective language teaching approaches and support mechanisms.

This study is aimed at discovering students’ perspectives regarding the use of role play in learning English, especially in learning speaking ability. This research used qualitative research where the research was conducted based on the actual conditions and the participants of this study are three English Education study Program students in one of the universities in Subang, West Java. This descriptive study employed questionnaire and interview guidelines in collecting the data and the researcher then checked the data to present all the information from the interviews and questionnaire in the form of a description after calculating the percentage of the questionnaire. In sum, this study found that the use of role-play in teaching and learning process gives many benefits for the students. Furthermore, the students have some problems by using role-play as learning technique such as they did not feel confident, could not master the material, feel nervous, and find difficulties to memorize.

The 2022 pandemic became the beginning of an online learning method, but until now it has been used under certain conditions, including English. The study is a qualitative approach to analyzing the effectiveness of English learning online at MTS at-tawazun. Based on data analysis, it can tell some of the problems in online English study: 1) learning conditions are less conducive, 2) less optimal delivery of learning materials, 3) students are less active and have difficulty concentrating during learning. It is in these issues that a solution is then sought.

Motivating Children’s Memory By Giving Memorizing the Qur'an

The study was intended to improve children’s memory by the one day one method at the tahfidz jauzen home. The kind of research used was class action research in collaborative ways. The subjects in this study are children of a group of 17 children. The method of data collection used was the method of oral testing and documentation. The research instrument used was the oral test assessment sheet. Data analysis techniques using quantitative and qualitative analytic techniques. Success indicators in the study if percentage calculations showed 78.3% of 17 children have memory at high criteria. Studies indicate that children’s memory can be increased by the method of one day one verse. This can be proved in a child’s initial condition before action indicates that the majority of children are at low criteria at a percentage of 76.47%. In the I cycle the child’s memory increased ata high criteria of 23.52% children successfully reaching high criteria, on the ii cycle children’s memory at high criteria was enhanced by a percentage of 88.23% of children successfully reaching memory indicators at high criteria.

This study aims to find out more about the topic of whether children are better than adults at learning a second language. Data collection in this study uses the method of analyzing two YouTube videos about whether children are better than adults in second language acquisition. It was found that both of them were able to acquire a second language well, because in learning a second language, no matter how old a person is, as long as he finds a suitable learning method and has a strong desire, of course, anything is possible.

This study aims to find out what difficulties students face in their English listening comprehension. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative, while the research instruments used questionnaires and interviews. This study used seven students from the English Education study program at Subang University, West Java as participants. The questionnaire was conducted on six categories of listening difficulties. The writer found ten problems faced by students in listening comprehension, some of which were caused by the listening material and the physical environment.

Islamic Junior High School Students’ Motivation for Learning English in Cipancuh

The purpose of the study was to investigate the level of motivation for learning English among Islamic junior high school students in Cipancuh. The study also explored the differences in students’ motivation for learning English based on the genders of the students. The participants of this study were 4 of 8th grade students at Islamic junior high school in Cipancuh. The data collection was a questionnaire, and researchers also added interviews to strengthen the research. The data for this study were analyzed qualitatively using thematic analysis. The findings showed that the students’ motivation for learning English was high. The finding revealed a significant difference in their motivation for learning English as female students have higher levels than male students. This study is expected to provide useful knowledge and information about students’ motivation in learning English.

Assessing Student’ Product of The Use of The Google Translate Application In EFL Writing Classroom (A Case in One of the English Education Program in Garut)

As a product of technological developments, Google translate is widely used by students as one of the supports in the learning process. Therefore, this study aims to assess student product in using Google Translate in EFL writing classroom. This research employed a case study design by using document analysis. This research took place at a university in Garut with eight purposive English education students as the research participants. The instrument used in this study was students' writing documents. The obtained data were analyzed with reference to the genre move theory of the thesis abstract. The findings show that Google translate only is not sufficient to use in translating since there are some elements to consider such as the aspects of cohesion and coherence of the text.

Making meaning opens up new worlds, deepens our comprehension of the environment, and offers infinite chances for both personal and professional development. This study highlights the importance of systemic functional analysis as a valuable tool for examining the linguistic features of different text types. Specifically, the focus is on applying this analysis to news item texts written by students from 12^th grade from SMAN 11 Garut. By investigating the mood blocks in the students texts, including subject choices, mood types, and clause structures, the study aims to determine if these tests align with the linguistic features commonly found in news item texts. However, a notable gap in the existing research is the lack of analysis regarding the interrelationship between mood blocks. Therefore, this study seeks to bridge this gap and provide insights into the analytical relationship within mood blocks, shedding light on the students’ ability to produce news item texts that accurately match the genre’s linguistic characteristics.

Problem-Based Learning Model in EFL Classroom: Eyes of Teacher and Students

Problem-based learning is important because it helps students develop critical thinking skills, learn in a relevant way, develop collaborative skills, encourage deep understanding, and increase intrinsic motivation. PBL is very relevant when used in current learning, or more precisely, in the Merdeka curriculum. However, the discussion regarding how PBL is perceived as one of the evaluations has not been widely studied. Therefore, this study aims to investigate teacher and student perceptions of the PBL model in the EFL classroom. This research method uses a qualitative case study design by using semi-structured interviews with one selected teacher and four selected students at a junior high school in Garut, West Java. In general, teachers and students had positive perceptions of PBL, but there were still some problems. First, teachers still lacked of the knowledge to implement PBL. Second, teachers had barriers in engaging students in class. Third, students felt that the teacher could not control the group work in class. Therefore, it is noted that in implementing PBL, teachers have to pay attention to classroom management, especially student engagement, and teachers also need to improve their skills in PBL by following some trainings.

An analysis of teacher and students’ interaction in EFL Classroom

Classroom interaction roles are very prominent in the EFL classroom setting, functioning to keep the engagement of students and teachers. However, the problem remains that the teacher’s interaction is more dominant than the students, showing that the class is less of students’ interaction. Thus, this study aims to investigate the types of interaction in the classroom and determine the cause of the problem occurring in classroom interaction. This research employed a qualitative approach in the form of a case study design. Data were conducted using observation and interview. Results showed that there were three types of interaction, one of which is teacher-whole class, teacher-individual student, and student-teacher. Besides, it was also found that the cause of the problem occurred is the lack of initiation to interact, lack of initiation to discussing the material, lack of vocabulary, and students do not immediately understand the material. Therefore, it is a big homework for teachers to create a more interesting atmosphere in the classroom.

The Impact of Corrective Feedback on Students’ Writing of Argumentative Genre

In the teaching context corrective feedback is very important to develoved students’ writing. However, on the contrary some students still find it difficult to express their thoughts in writing courses. Therefore this research appears to be able to find out the extent to which lecturers' corrective feedback affects students' writing skills. This research is a case study with a qualitative approach, which was conducted at a private university in West Java. The data were collected from observation and interview. The data were analyzed using of through some techniques such as, data collection, data presentation, data reduction, and drawing conclusions. The data shows that corrective feedback could develoved students writing of argumentative teks such as generic structure involving thesis, argument, and conclusion. However for the aspect of linguistic features students still have problem in aspect grammatical. Furthermore, lecturers have to pay more attention to this aspect for correction, which is still a difficulty for some students.

EFL Teacher’s Understanding on the Implementation of Project-Based learning

The Merdeka Curriculum, the latest curriculum in Indonesia, adopts student-centered learning in the classroom context. Specifically, one of teaching approaches promoted in this curriculum is Project-Based Learning (PBL). However, discussions regarding the extent to which teachers understand PBL have not been much studied. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the teachers' understanding on the PBL implementation. To achieve this aim, qualitative in the form of case study design was employed, conducted in one of junior high schools in West Java, involving an English teacher as a research participant. The data in this study were obtained from semi-structured interviews completed by observation and documentation. These results confirmed that the teacher already understood the general notion, goals, and stages in implementing PBL; however, there was still a problem striming specifically in time management in which the teacher had difficulties in determining the time to implement PBL and P5 (Project penguatan profile pelajar Pancasila) in the same time.

The Implementation of Discovery Learning in EFL Writing Classroom

Discovery learning is one of the teaching methods implemented in the 2013 curriculum. However, there has not been much discussion regarding how to implement discovery learning in the realm of English learning. Hence, this research aims to scrutinize the implementation of discovery learning to develop students' writing skills. To achieve the goal, qualitative research in form of case study design was employed, involving classroom observation as the data collection technique. The data were obtained from the third graders in in one of senior high schools and analyzed inductively. The results showed that all stages of discovery learning were carried out through stimulation, problem statements, data collection, data processing, verification and generalization. However, it was found that through the implementation of discovery learning, there were students who were passive in the class and not engaged. Teachers need to consider the ways how to attract students' interest in discovery learning for example by using multimodal sources such as giving more videos and pictures. The pedagogical implications of these findings will be discussed.

The Implementation of Growing Gardening Metaphors in Students Writing Descriptive Text

This study investigates the implementation of growing gardening metaphors in students writing the descriptive text of VII grade students in a school in Garut. It explores the metaphor of growing gardening that can be used by teachers to make teaching and learning in English classes more enjoyable and communicative. To this end, the study carried out qualitative methods with a case study design. Then the results of the study show that the application of the growing-gardening metaphor can overcome the problem of writing descriptive texts in class VII of junior high school. Because this metaphor activity is used as a solution for teachers to solve students' problems in writing descriptive texts in the first grade of junior high school. This helps the teacher in teaching writing descriptive texts which motivates students to think more creatively in considering the same function or activity both experience and garden vocabulary when writing texts. To carry out this class activity, the teacher takes approximately 80 minutes to spend the required time. This study concludes that The growing gardening metaphor can be applied to junior high school students in Garut.

Student Perception of the Use of Animated Video in Vocabulary Junior High Scholl

A long with the technology advancement, teachers have use animated video in the teaching of text. However, the discussion on how the animated video is perceived is still rarely investigated. Therefore, this study is an attempt to explore student’s perception on the use animated video under multimodal approach in their vocabulary learning. To achieve the objective of this study, qualitative case study design was employed with six seven graders as the research participants in one of Junior High Schools in ^Garut West Java. The data were collected by using interviews and observations. The results revealed that students had the positive perception on using animated video in their vocabulary learning. They felt motivated by use of various modes of communication applied in animated videos. In addition to that, students also reported that animated video helped them remember vocabulary and how to pronounce it. It means that animated video could have students visualize the concept of learning material.

Portraying Systemic Functional Linguistics Genre-based Approach in Kurikulum Merdeka in EFL Senior High School

Due to the change of the curriculum in Indonesia into Kurikulum Merdeka, the government still recommends the Genre Based Approach (GBA) in teaching English. Nevertheless, the study centering on how this approach was implemented in the latest curriculum is still very few. Hence, this study aims to portray the implementation of SFL-GBA in Kurikulum Merdeka in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. A qualitative case study research design was employed. This study was conducted in a public senior high school in West Java, involving one purposive English teacher as the research participant. In collecting the data, classroom observation and interviews were used and analyzed using inductive analysis. The results indicate that almost all stages of SFL-GBA stages were implemented by the teacher. Specifically, at the final stage (Independent Construction of the Text), the teacher missed the important activity; that is, giving corrective feedback. Therefore, it is expected to teachers in having more effective classroom management to employ the complete stages of SFL-GBA approach.

The Contribution of Teacher Talk on Student Engagement in English Classroom

Effective teacher-student communication is essential for fostering a positive learning environment and encouraging student engagement. Other than that, the influence of teacher talk on student engagement extends beyond academic achievement to social-emotional growth and overall student well-being. Therefore, this study investigates the relationship between teacher talk and student engagement in the classroom. To attain that purpose, this research used a case study with a qualitative approach. The data were obtained through non-participant observation with the 11th grade in an EFL classroom at one of the senior high schools in Garut. The observation was analyzed inductively using the framework of teacher talks in the system of foreign language interaction. The findings show that there were five categories of teacher talk in this classroom, such as praising and encouraging, using the ideas of students, asking questions, giving information, and giving direction. However, asking questions is the dominant talk type used by the teacher. In relation to the teacher talk found in the class, the result revelaed that there was only one category of student engagement: cognitive engagement. It means that the teacher should manage her talk not only focusing on how students could be academically engaged, but also how students’ emotion and behavior are also being the concern in the classroom setting.

The Use of Image in EFL Classroom: The Perspective of Multimodality

The potential effects of multimodality in the classroom have been widely recognized by many researchers. However, a discussion on how teachers explore the use of images as non-verbal modes in the classroom is still limited. Thus, this study aims to explore how images are used in an English class in one of the senior high schools. The qualitative case study method was chosen with the hope of achieving the objectives of the research. The data were obtained from interviews and observations in one class from one of the upper secondary schools in Garut. The results of the study show that the teacher employed images solely as a tool to attract students' attention and motivation. It indicates that the teacher need to upgrade the knowledge and the competency to benefit the images as a multimodal resource for meaning making process, not merely as the ornaments.

Investigation of Speaking Anxiety in Case Study Method Classroom

Speaking is one of the skills in learning English that needs to be mastered. This skill is very important to the master because it relates to the real life of students in communicating. But in fact there are still many students who have anxiety in speaking let alone using English. The use of the case method in learning English can be a solution in improving students’ speaking skills in class. In this study, researchers used the case method as a tool to increase student motivation in improving students’ speaking skills in learning activities in class. This study aims to investigate students’ speaking anxiety in the study method in the classroom. This is qualitative research as a research design. The participants of this research were 10 students from the English Education Department. Questionnaires and interviews are used by writers as data collection techniques. The results of this study indicate that students agree that the case study method can improve their speaking skills because the case study method often asks students to find solutions to many cases and expressing their opinions in front of the class makes them participate in presentations and discussions. Not only that, students believed that the case study method also made students feel motivated to speak in front of the class. So it can be concluded that most students will feel anxious when appointed to speak or express their opinion in front of the class, and they believe that speaking skill is the most difficult thing to master.
